BitcoinSquare’s COPA Sues Self-Proclaimed Bitcoin Inventor Craig WrightCraig Wright will soon learn how it feels to be on the ot

Copies of the court papers were submitted to the UK’s High Court of Justice on April 12, 2021, in a lawsuit filed contending Wright is neither the author nor the owner of the white paper.

The Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), founded by Jack Dorsey-run payment processing company Square, has filed a lawsuit against nChain chief scientist Craig Wright related to his attempts to copyright the Bitcoin white paper.

Even though Bitcoincore.org eventually cooperated, Wright's legal strategy led to the opposite effect of what he intended.

CoPA responded that it would not take actions against the white paper, even though that began to be hosted by other organizations. Soon after, the government of Estonia and that of Colombia also viewed the white paper. The week before the February 5 deadline, COPA sent Wright a letter asking for more information about his copyright claims.

"Please explain how you know your client is the author of the White Paper behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto."

In addition to clarifying its skepticism, The lawsuit, filed with UK’s High Court of Justice, claimed Wright is neither the author nor the owner of the white paper, and that, therefore, COPA’s publication was not an infringement. It is seeking an injunction, so that Wright cannot claim authorship. "We don't care who created bitcoin, we just care who didn't." It sent similar letters to Bitcoin.org and Bitcoincore.org.

Members include Coinbase, Kraken, and OKCoin, as well as MicroStrategy, Blockstream, and BitPay. Wright, meanwhile, seems to have few defenders. Within a week of the January 21 cease-and-desist letters, other groups began hosting the white paper, including the governments of Estonia and Colombia.

COPA demurred. It's my understanding that . A lawsuit has been filed against Bitcoin chief scientist Craig Wright by the Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), founded by Jack Dorsey-run payment processing company Square.

We stand by the Bitcoin developer community and the many others who have been threatened because of hosting the Bitcoin White Paper. The lawsuit, filed with UK’s High Court of Justice, claimed Wright is neither the author nor the owner of the white paper, and that, therefore, COPA’s publication was not an infringement. It is seeking an injunction, so that Wright cannot claim authorship. “We don’t care who created bitcoin, just who didn’t.”

Square established COPA in September 2020 to prevent patent trolling—the practice of locking up patents not with the intention of using them, but of suing companies who infringe on them. In recent years, Australian computer scientist Wright — who is considered the father of Bitcoin Cash’s split between Bitcoin Cash & Satoshi Vision — has claimed that he is the beguiling Bitcoin inventor himself.

COPA’s members include crypto exchanges Coinbase, Kraken, and OKCoin, as well as MicroStrategy, Blockstream, and BitPay.

It also sent similar letters to Bitcoin.org and Bitcoincore.org. Although Bitcoincore.org eventually complied, Wright’s legal strategy had the opposite effect of what he intended. It has a market cap of $4.8 billion compared to Bitcoin Cash’s $12.5 billion and Bitcoin’s $1.1 trillion.
