Metaverse has become an irresistible avenue for many as more big names pour investments into the technology. From Facebook changing its corporate entity to ‘Meta’ to Adidas and Nike launching their own metaverse wearables, metaverse and Web 3.0 gained immense popularity in 2021.
2022 is likely no different as the Australian Open, the highest attended Grand Slam event, has started off the year with its debut in the metaverse. The Tennis tournament has maneuvered its way into with the launch of its own Tennis-focused NFT collection. Along with this, the tournament will also stream on the metaverse platform Decentraland.
As per the announcement, the collection will contain a total of 6,776 Art Balls NFTs which will be linked to live tournament data. The balls’ will be related to a designated plot on the real tennis court surface, and the surface that results in the winning shot will be updated in real-time on the NFT.
In addition, if an NFT owner happens to have the winning NFT, they will receive the physical ball in a custom engraved case.
Owners of the NFTs will receive the airdrop with footage of the winning shot, limited edition wearables, and merch. The digital collectibles will go live on January 10th with a price of 0.067 ETH per NFT.
“The AO has always been seen as one of the most innovative sporting events in the world and this project is just another example of our team pushing the boundaries to provide our fans with better access and engagement with the AO,” Tournament director Craig Tiley said in a statement.
